Places to visit
The visitor who is willing to discover the surrounding area has a wealth of choices and activities. Stunning beaches that extend to the southern side of the Prefecture, from the beach of “Agios Pavlos” with the sand dunes, “Triopetra”, “Ligres”, the beach of “Preveli” with the lake, the river and the palm forest, the beach of “Schinaria” and “Ammoudi” with the crystal blue waters, the cosmopolitan beach of “Plakias”, the calm beaches of “Korakas”, “Polyrizos” and “Peristere” in Rodakino, the “Orthi Ammos” near Frangokastello and many more.
A visit to the historic “Preveli Monastery” as well as a walk through the gorges of the area (Kotsifou Gorge, Kourtaliotis Gorge with the magnificent waterfalls) will reward you. The mysterious castle (ask the locals about the history) of “Frangokastellos” is also nearby and very easily accessible. If you are lucky, you may even catch a concert taking place inside it.


Preveli Monastery
The Monastery of Preveli is an Orthodox monastery located in the municipality of Agios Vasilios, Crete. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist (lower monastery) and Saint John the Theologian (rear monastery). It is located near the southern coast of Crete, near the Preveli area, where the palm grove of the same name is located. The monastery stands out from the other monasteries of Crete as it has two monastic complexes, the Lower Monastery and the Rear Monastery, the latter being the main one.


Frangokastello
Frangokastello (from the Italian words Franco, meaning "Free", and Castello, meaning "Castle") is a medieval castle located on the south coast of Crete, approximately 12 kilometers east of Chora Sfakia, within the prefecture of Chania. It is one of the most important sights of the area and is famous for the phenomenon known as Drosoulites, which is observed in the plain around the castle, every year in late spring.


Kourtaliotiko Gorge
The Kourtaliotis Gorge is a gorge located in the southern prefecture of Rethymno, Crete, with its beginning near the village of Koxare. The gorge is formed between the mountains of Kouroupa and Xiro Oros and its walls are up to 600 meters high. Many caves are formed on the walls of the gorge. The gorge is crossed by the Kourtaliotis River, which flows into Preveli, where there is a palm grove.


Kotsifos Gorge
The Kotsifos Gorge is a gorge on the southern side of the western part of the island of Crete. It is situated west of the mountain of Kouroupa, north of the town of Plakias, and on the road between Sellia and Angouseliana. It is noted for the high number of Cretan endemic plant species that grow there.
